Laa ilaaha illaa Allah : There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone. This is the complete belief that Indeed there is nothing truly deserving worship except Allah. It is necessary to know that it is not meant for one to merely repeat these words with the lips, as was mentioned by Wahb ibn Munabbih to the person who asked him “Isn’t Laa ilaaha illaa Allah the key to Jannah?” Wahb said “Of course, however, there is no key except that it has teeth. So if you come with a key that has teeth, then it will open for you, otherwise, it won’t open for you.” – Narrated by Bukhari in the chapter ‘ whoever’s last word is Laa ilaaha illaa Allah’.And the teeth of this key are: The conditions of Laa ilaaha illaa Allah. The Virtues of Laa ilaaha illaa Allah. It has great virtues and it has a high status, whoever says it truthfully, Allah will enter him into Jannah. Whoever says it falsely, then his blood is spared and his wealth protected in this life. As for the hereafter, his accounting is with Allah and he will be judged like the Hypocrites. And from this great phrase (laa ilaaha illaa Allah) there are many virtues. From these virtues, are that:
And from it’s virtues are that it opens for the one who says it, all eight gates of Jannah for him to enter from whichever one he wishes. And from it’s virtues are that the people of this word, even if they do enter the Hell fire due to their shortcomings in their duties, then indeed it is inevitable that they will leave from the Hell fire. This is some of what Ibn Rajab mentioned in his book (kalimatul-Ikhlaas) concerning the virtues of Laa ilaaha illaa Allah and in his book he brings evidences for each one.
The pillars of Laa ilaaha illaa Allah The pillars of Laa ilaaha illaa Allah are two: Negation and Affirmation. 1) Negation – Laa ilaaha (There is no God), nullifies all forms of Shirk (associating partners with Allah). And it makes obligatory for one to Disbelieve in and reject all things being worshipped other than Allah. 2) Affirmation – illaa Allah (Except Allah), affirms that nothing is worthy of worship except Allah. And the meaning of this comes in the Book of Allah in Suratul Baqarah, verse 256, when Allah said “And whoever disbelieves in Taghoot and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break” “And whoever disbelieves in Taghoot” - This is the meaning of the first pillar (negation). “And believes in Allah” - This is the meaning of the second pillar (affirmation). And Allah said relating Ibrahim in surah Az-Zukhruf verse 26, “Verily I am innocent (free from) what you worship” and verse 27, “Except Him who did create me, and verily He will guide me” “Verily I am innocent from what you worship” is the meaning of the first pillar – Negation “Except for Him who did create me” – is the meaning of the second pillar – Affirmation. The scholars have mentioned that Laa ilaaha illaa Allah has seven conditions and some scholars made the conditions 8. In Arabic there is a poem which mentions these conditions in a way easy to memorize, however in English it may not sound poetic: Knowledge, Certainty, Sincerity, and your Truthfulness with Love and submission and acceptance, they have And the eighth condition is to disbelieve in All the false gods being worshiped. 1)
Al-ilm:
Knowledge – negates ignorance. So if the servant Knows that Allah is the one and only deserving worship, and that the worship of others is completely false, and he acts in accordance with that knowledge, then he is knowledgeable of it’s meaning. Allah said, “so know that Laa ilaaha illaa Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)” – Surah Muhammad, verse 19. And Allah said, “except for those who bear witness to the Truth, And they KNOW” – Surah Zukhruf, verse 86. 2)
Al-Yaqeen
– Certainty – negates Doubt It is obligatory upon the one who says Laa ilaaha illaa Allah, to have certainty with his heart and believe the correctness of that which he says regarding the legal claim of Allah’s deservedness of being worshipped, and the falsehood of anything besides Allah being considered deserving worship. Allah said, “And who believe in (Qur’aan and Sunnah) which has been sent down to you (O Muhammad SAW) and in that which was sent down before you (The Taurat and Injeel) and they believe with CERTAINTY in the hereafter.” - Suratul Baqarah, verse 4. And on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said, “The Messenger S.A.W. said “I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship besides Allah, and I am the messenger of Allah, No servant will meet Allah with it (the Shahaadah) without any DOUBT in it, except that he will enter Al-Jannah”. Narrated by Muslim. As for the one who is Doubtful, then he is from the Munaafiqeen (the Hypocrites). Allah said in Surah At-Tawbah: “It is only those who believe not in Allah and the Last Day and whose hearts are in DOUBT that ask your leave. So in their DOUBTS they waver.”, verse 45. 3)
Al-Ikhlaas
– Sincerity – negates Shirk All speech and actions should spring from Sincerity for the face of Allah and seeking His pleasure without being polluted with Shirk in any way. 4)
As-Sidq
– Truthfulness – negates Lying That is to be truthful with Allah in one’s Iman (faith), truthful in one’s belief, truthful in one’s speech, truthful in one’s calling. 5)
Al-Mahabbah
– Love – negates Hate So one loves this word (Laa ilaaha illaa Allah) and what it represents, and loves those who act in accordance to that which it necessitates. So one loves Allah and His Messenger S.A.W., and puts his love of them before (ahead of) his love of anyone else. Narrated
Anas, The Prophet
said, "Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have
the sweetness (delight) of faith: 6)
Al-Inqiyaad
– Submission – negates resistance Is the surrender and compliance with that which this great word ‘Laa ilaaha illaa Allah’ necessitates. 7)
Al-Qubool
– Acceptance – negates Rejection One accepts everything that this word ‘Laa ilaaha illaa Allah’ necessitates with one’s heart and tongue (words). Allah The Most High said, “Say (O Muslims), We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us.” Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 136. So whoever says it ‘Laa ilaaha illah Allah’ and doesn’t accept that, then he becomes of those who Allah referred to them when He said: “Truly, when it was said to them Laa ilaaha illaa Allah, they puffed themselves up with pride. And they said, Are we going to abandon our aalihah (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?” Surah As-Saaffaat, verse 35 and 36.
Disbelief
in that which is worshipped besides Allah Allah The Most High said: “Whoever disbelieves in Taghut (anything worshipped besides Allah) and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold”, Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 256. And the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: “Whoever says ‘Laa ilaaha illaa Allah’ and disbelieves in that which is worshipped besides Allah, his wealth and his blood is forbidden (sacred), and his accounting is with Allah.” Narrated by Muslim.
