Breakfast provides the best start to the day and makes an important contribution to the nutrient content of the diet Young children will find it difficult to eat enough to satisfy their nutritional needs if they skip breakfast It is likely that breakfast will stave off mid-morning hunger pangs A healthy breakfast should be high in starchy carbohydrate and low in fat. Uncooked breakfasts can include cereals (particularly wholegrain), milk, fruit juice, breads (particularly wholegrain), yogurts, fruit. Cooked breakfasts can include grilled lean bacon, grilled vegetables, baked potato products, fruit pancakes, porridge, poached eggs Breakfast provides a good opportunity to enhance vitamins and minerals intake For example: Fortified breakfast cereals are useful sources of iron, fibre and B vitamins, particularly folic acid which is important for pregnant women and those intending to become pregnant Milk is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, especially calcium which is particularly needed by children for growing bones Orange juice is a useful source of vitamin C Bread is a good source of starchy carbohydrate Try not to skip breakfast just because there’s no time in the morning.Taken from the British Nutrition Guide
